Book Review

This book is about the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918-1919. It is set in Seddon, near Footscray, so it has a really local focus, which made it seem more real and relatable. Charlotte McKenzie is a 12 year old girl that becomes a doctor’s assistant when the Influenza Epidemic comes to Melbourne. The book is her diary, in which she discusses the symptoms, how people thought the epidemic originated, how people tried to protect themselves from it, what treatments they had, and how people who came down with it were looked after. I found myself comparing what we know of the covid -19 epidemic and comparing it to the epidemic in this book. Masks and distancing were the most important things back then too. It made me feel a bit less scared about what is going on in the world right now because it described what happened in the epidemic, and how it played out. This book was written in 2001, but has been republished now because it is relevant to what we are living through right now. I think it’s a good book for middle years students, but senior students might appreciate it too, as it is really well written and has lots of historical details incorporated into the story.
